About Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro National Park covering an area of some 75,575 ha protects the largest free standing volcanic mass in the world and the highest mountain in Africa, rising 4877m above surrounding plains to 5895m at its peak. With its snow-capped peak, the Kilimanjaro is a superlative natural phenomenon, standing in isolation above the surrounding plains overlooking the savannah.

Climbing the Mountain takes you on a journey up her slopes of a climatic world tour from the tropics to the Arctic. The grassy slopes turn to lush rainforest, inhabited by wild animals. Above the tree line is heath and moorland, dominated by giant heathers, and then surreal alpine desert and finally the regal beauty befitting the top of the African continent, smattered by ice and snow.

In actual fact, planning your summit attempt to coincide with the full moon dates mentioned below would enhance your whole trek up the mountain, offering some magnificent night views of Kibo from most of the overnight camps.
